Born in January 1964 in Taipei, Taiwan, Joseph Tsai is a Hong Kong-Canadian billionaire businessman, lawyer, and philanthropist. He grew up in Hong Kong and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1986, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Yale Law School in 1990. After working as a corporate lawyer for Sullivan & Cromwell in New York, Tsai joined the Hong Kong-based investment firm, Rosewood Resources, in 1995. In 1999, he co-founded the Chinese multinational technology company Alibaba Group, where he is currently executive vice chairman. In addition to his business interests, Tsai is the owner of the Brooklyn Nets of the American National Basketball Association (NBA), the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), and the San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League. He also maintains interests in several other professional sports franchises. Tsai holds a Hong Kong SAR passport and his net worth is estimated to be US$8.1 billion.
