Flare Hackathon Highlights Verifiable AI Innovations with Google Cloud Confidential Space

      Beginner 2m

      Key takeaways:

      • The hackathon brought together over 460 participants to develop verifiable AI solutions for blockchain applications.
      • Winning projects leveraged Google Cloud Confidential Space for cryptographic attestations verifiable on Flare.
      • The event marked the launch of the Flare AI Kit, an SDK for building blockchain-based AI agents.

Verifiable AI development showcased at Flare and Google Cloud hackathon

A recent hackathon hosted by Flare and Google Cloud, in partnership with Blockchain at Berkeley, brought together student developers and researchers from leading institutions like UC Berkeley, the University of Waterloo, and ETH Zurich. Held from March 7 to 9, the event explored how blockchains can support AI-driven computations while maintaining trust and transparency.

Participants used Google Cloud Confidential Space, which provides secure enclaves based on Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), alongside AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) and virtual Trusted Platform Module (vTPM) attestations. These technologies allow cryptographic proof that computations occurred in tamper-proof environments, with results verifiable on the Flare blockchain. Flare, powered by its native FLR token, provides essential infrastructure for verifiable computations through its enshrined data protocols — Flare Time Series Oracle and Flare Data Connector — both crucial in ensuring data provenance and integrity for AI outputs.

More than 460 developers worked across four distinct tracks, developing AI-powered solutions ranging from decentralized finance applications (DeFAI) to consensus learning models.

Standout projects and new developer tools

One of the standout projects, 2DeFi, was created by University of Waterloo students Alex and Hitarth. Their project won first place in the AI x DeFi track and second place in the RAG Knowledge track. 2DeFi’s solution bridged traditional finance users to DeFi by allowing users to upload screenshots of their Robinhood portfolios. These were then analyzed by Google Gemini 2.0 to assess risk tolerance and match them with automated DeFi strategies on Flare. The project also integrated Google login-based wallet creation to streamline onboarding for new users.

The hackathon also marked the official launch of the Flare AI Kit, an open-source SDK designed to help developers build verifiable AI agents on the Flare blockchain. The kit aims to simplify the integration of AI while ensuring trust and data integrity, offering secure environments for AI execution and comprehensive security frameworks.

"We're thrilled to see developers using our Confidential Space secure enclaves to build trusted AI solutions. Projects like 2DeFi and the Flare AI Kit's launch are exciting steps towards a future where AI and blockchain ensure data integrity and computational assurance."
—Rene Kolga, Product Manager at Google Cloud

      The bottom line

The Flare x Google Cloud hackathon demonstrated growing interest in combining blockchain with AI, offering verifiable solutions that address transparency and trust challenges. With the introduction of Flare AI Kit and continued collaboration between developers and researchers, Flare is positioning itself as a key platform for building verifiable AI applications. Future iterations of the Flare AI Kit aim to provide a ready-to-use framework for enterprises, with plans to make it available on the Google Cloud Marketplace.
